Introducing StackAnywhere

StackAnywhereIf you follow Rectangular Software on Twitter, or if you’ve visited our website in the last few days, you’ll have noticed a new addition to our collection of Android apps. StackAnywhere is an Android client for the Stack Exchange network.

Stack Exchange is a family of question and answer sites that began with the massively popular Stack Overflow site for programmers and has since expanded to cover dozens of other topics. There is a Stack Exchange site for questions about cooking, one for Android users, one for photography, and several others with more being created all the time via a community-driven process.

StackAnywhere delivers these sites in a package better suited to browsing on a mobile device. All Stack Exchange sites are supported, including meta and beta sites. In addition to being able to browse and search each site, StackAnywhere includes new answer notifications and a widget for displaying a user’s reputation and badges along with their daily reputation change. The widget also provides one-touch access to a user’s full profile including all of their questions and answers.

StackAnywhereBest of all, we are making StackAnywhere available free-of-charge (supported by unobtrusive adverts). You can download it now from the Android Market. As this is the first public version of StackAnywhere we’d be interested in your feedback (leave a message here or contact us).

Please note that StackAnywhere does not currently support the posting of new questions and answers because this functionality is not yet provided by the Stack Exchange API. We hope to be able to add this functionality in the future.

Appmonger Improvements – New and Upcoming

Here at a snowbound Rectangular HQ, work is progressing on version 1.4 of Appmonger. Version 1.4 will deliver some more user requested features, including notifications when new orders are received and charts that show the number of items sold (as opposed to just showing net revenue).

Version 1.4 isn’t ready just yet and we wanted to give you something for the festive season, so we’ve pushed out an interim update – version 1.3.1.  This release includes a few fixes, including improvements for downloading huge numbers of orders (there is usually a big download required the first time that you use Appmonger).  If you lose the network connection during the download now you won’t have to fetch all of the orders again, instead it will pick-up where it left off.

Appmonger widgetsMore interestingly, we’ve implemented another couple of your suggestions. Firstly, widgets can now be configured to show sales figures for just one app instead of all apps. You can still show your total sales with a single widget if you want to, but now you also have the option of adding multiple per-app widgets to your phone’s home screen. You will need to remove and re-add existing widgets. Secondly, pie chart views now show the absolute value associated with each slice as well as the relative percentage.

QR CodeIf you’re an existing Appmonger user, you should get the update automatically from the Android Market. New users can purchase Appmonger from the Market for less than two English pounds.

If you have ideas for how to make Appmonger better, please share them.
